Inspired by the Iconic brown bears fishing at Brooks Falls in Alaska, Top of the Chain celebrates one of natures most powerful predators in it's element. Drawing from numerous reference photographs, I created an original composition that captures the drama of a massive bear standing at the crest of the falls as salmon leap through the rushing water. The painting was designed to emphasize the bear's commanding presence, with the powerful current, cascading water, and surrounding movement all leading the viewer toward it's watchful face and imposing stance.

The composition balances the dark strength of the bear against the brilliant tinted whites and cool blues of the waterfall, while subtle details such as the salmon, the bear's shadow, and the flowing water create movement and depth throughout the scene. The title, Top of the Chain, reflects the unmistakable authority of the bear--a reminder that this is its domain, where strength, instinct, and survival rule.

This painting became a study in painting motion rather than simply painting water. Using wet-into-wet techniques, I blended deep blues, greens, and purples into the cascading whites to create the energy of the rushing falls, while layers of foam, splashing water, and subtle color variations brought the scene to life. The bear's coat was developed with contrasting textures, using softer, drying fur on the sunlit back and darker, wetter strokes along the lower body to suggest its recent passage through the water. Each layer added depth and realism, making both the waterfall and the bear feel alive with movement.
