Inspired by a striking mule deer photo, Looking Back captures the classic posture of a mule deer--it's body angled away while it's head turns back in quiet vigilance, always keeping an escape route in sight. Drawing from years of photographing the plains and foothills of Colorado and Wyoming, I created the surrounding landscape as an original composition, combining native grasses, wildflowers, and distant mountain ranges to reflect the deer's natural habitat.

Every element of the composition was designed to lead the viewer's eye toward the animal's face and impressive antlers. Strong sunlight illuminates the deer's shoulder, face, and rack, while the antlers rise above the horizon, breaking the line between the mountains and sky to create depth and visual interest. Detailed foreground plants and textures gradually soften into the distant landscape through atmospheric perspective, allowing the mule deer to remain the unmistakable focal point of the painting.

This painting was built around the contrast of warm sunlight and the cool tones of the distant mountains and sky. Layered brushwork creates rich textures in the grasses, wildflowers, and the deer's coat, while subtle blue-gray highlights in the sunlit areas add a natural quality to the light without relying on pure white. As the landscape recedes, the details become softer and more atmospheric, enhancing the sense of depth while keeping the viewer's attention focused on the mule deer's alert expression and beautifully illuminated antlers.
