When I created Living on the Edge, I wanted to combine my love of mountain landscapes with my love of wolves. Having lived with three hybrid 85% wolves in my thirties, only heightened my fascination. Also they are one of my favorite subjects to paint. {big surprise} But actually it is because of the variety of their fur length, texture, and markings. Plus their intelligence, hierarchy, pack hunting skills, and just their life style. I began with several dramatic mountain refs, combining snow-covered peaks and exposed rock formations into a landscape that felt both beautiful and unforgiving. Then I placed the wolf on a narrow ledge, frozen in a moment of absolute focus, as if he has just spotted movement far below.
The composition is built around that feeling of high tension. The overlapping mountain ridges create a sense of endless distance, while the wolf breaks across those layers, bringing the scene into the present. His open mouth and drifting breath hint at a long pursuit through the frozen wilderness, and sun is going down, the jagged cliffs echo the determination in his gaze. There is beauty in the silence, but also the constant reminder that survival in these mountains is earned one step at a time.
This painting became an opportunity to study the many textures of a wolf's coat without relying on excessive detail. Instead of rendering every individual hair, I grouped the fur into larger masses of light and shadow, allowing the form to emerge naturally while preserving a lifelike appearance. Warm earth tones in the wolf contrast against the cool blues and tinted whites of the snow-covered peaks, while overlapping mountain planes the mist of his breath create depth and atmosphere. Every compositional choice was made to heighten the feeling of elevation, endurance, and quiet intensity that defines life on the mountain's edge.
