Inspired by a life long fascination and connection with wolves especially after raising three 85% hybrids in my thirties. Seeing and interacting with them on a daily bases only increased my interest. From what I knew about their pack hunting abilities, coordination, hierarchy, and intelligence In the wild, then combined with the personal up close stuff. This is where the title {Ghost} and this drawing, plus the painting A Cold Stare came from.

I have had them in the deep woods back then never on a leash in a place they had never been. They would explore sometimes a half mile away but always come back and check my location. I would call their names and hide behind a big tree or rock. Not hear them, so I would get ready to call again, all of a sudden I would look and fifty feet away peeking at me from behind a tree, sometimes from different locations. I heard no sound despite the woods having dead leaves, sticks, and other debris everywhere. I equated their long jumps across small streams and other obstacles sometimes 20-25 feet, to pouring fluid almost appearing to look like slow motion landing without losing the running motion or speed.

This portrait presents a wolf in a three-quarter profile, eyes focused on something just beyond the viewer, creating a sense of silent awareness and untamed spirit. Delicate transitions from light to shadow and the clean white background place every detail of the animal's expression and character at the center of the composition, evoking the fleeting presence of a ghost moving effortlessly through the wilderness. Created entirely with three pencils on Bristol Strathmore plate finish. I have developed this style over years as I always thought most pencil or graphite work looked mostly mid tone and lacked the pop I was looking for. Especially the really dark almost black around the features.
