Inspired by the thousands of photos I've taken in the last five years in Moraine Park, at Rocky Mountain National Park, Bellow of the Beast came out of about six photo refs. This piece captures the unforgettable experience of encountering a mature bull elk during the autumn rut. Rising from a mountain waterway with it's breath visible in the crisp morning air, the elk commands attention with it's powerful stance, massive antlers, and intense gaze. Every element of the composition was designed to recreate the atmosphere of those early mornings, from the drifting fog and distant mountains to the golden grasses and quiet stream.

The composition draws the viewer directly to the elk's face and impressive rack through carefully placed leading lines. Fallen logs, flowing water, and surrounding grasses naturally guide the eye toward the focal point, while layers of misty mountains recede into the background, creating depth and emphasizing the immense scale and majesty of this Iconic Rocky Mountain animal.

To create a strong sense of depth and atmosphere, the background mountains were softened with cool layers of blue-gray fog, while warm sunlight highlights the elk's body, bringing it forward in the composition. Fine brushwork captures the textures of the animal's coat, the moisture on it's face, and the surrounding grasses, while carefully balanced warm and cool tones recreate the crisp light and quiet beauty of a fall morning in the Rockies.
